7^th March – Yesterday, a new „Smart school“ was ceremonially opened in Tuzla Canton – newly reconstructed, energy efficient Public Institution Primary School “Ivan Goran Kovačić” in Gradačac. Construction – finishing works conducted on school building were worth about 170.000 KM. The following energy efficiency measures were implemented:

• Installation of thermal insulation on outside walls of the school building;
• Installation of new outside joinery;
• Installation of thermal insulation at the attic of the schools building and the gym;
• Installation of new heating boiler utilizing pellet as fuel.

With ceremonial cutting of the ribbon at the school door, the primary school „Ivan Goran Kovačić“ in Gradačac gained the title Smart, energy efficient school. The classrooms were much warmer this winter for 850 students than they used to be before. The ribbon was ceremonially cut by Mr. Husein Topčagić, minister of internal affairs in the Government of TC, Mr. Damir Mirković, deputy prime minister of Brod-Posavina County, Mr. Edis Dervišagić, mayor of Gradačac municipality and Ms. Jasmina Ćatić, school director.

“This school has remembered hard, sad and nice days since its establishment. However, this is one of the most important days in the history of this school. I would like to thank to the Government of Tuzla Canton for co-funding the energy reconstruction of this school within the crossborder cooperation programme. I believe that these activities, as well as the activities implemented in previous period including arrangement of the school yard and construction of the sport fields near the school, will provide much better conditions for work of our students and teachers“– said the municipal mayor mr. sci Edis Dervišagić.

After the ceremonial opening of the reconstructed school, the round table was held with the topic: „Effects and potentials of energy efficiency in public sector“. The round table was attended by the representatives of the Government of Tuzla Canton, Brod-Posavina County, relevant ministries in the Government of TC, municipal mayor of Gradačac, municipal departments, non-governmental organisations, project team members and school management.

In addition to presentation of effects of the implemented energy efficiency measures on reconstructed school building, the participants at the round table discussed, among other things, the effects of implementation of energy efficiency measures in public buildings, the experiences from the Republic of Croatia in implementation of the projects funded by EU and the potentials for use of those funds in BiH.

Energy reconstruction of school building was implemented within 3,2 million KM worth crossborder project. The project is funded within INTERREG IPA CBC Crossborder cooperation programme Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Monte Negro 2014.-2020. The project is implemented by: the Centre for Development and Support (CRP) from Tuzla, the government of Tuzla Canton, the government of Brod-Posavina County, the association Green Action from Zagreb and Brod Ecological Society (BED) from Slavonski Brod.
